The almost final event of the not to be missed
Headley CC calendar saw a great turn out (67 in all) of both young and
old.
Another great bash organised by Barny Harrison with a little (and I do
mean little) help from Granty Waller raised around £1800 for the club
coffers.
Noteworthy mentions were...
Mrs. Collett (again): for the incredibly high standard of food and
thanks to her company of helpers, much better than the Saturday 2nd XI
lunches this year;
Barny Harrison after telling
everyone it was a tie and suit affair turning up in a chest hair
revealing shirt that could only have been borrowed from a homeless Elvis
impersonator;
Clarkey and David Hufton : for getting
trolleyed before the speeches had even started.
A
special mention goes to all those who donated the stunning auction
prizes of which some were the signed racing cap from Jenson Button,
tickets with dinner to the Rugby and some more tickets with and without
Dinner to the test matches. In fact the bidding went so well some
prizes such as a signed picture of V.V.S. Laxman were held back for another event.
The results are:
-
2 tkts England vs Wales (Rugby) - won by Malcolm Hyland
-
2 tkts England vs New Zealnd (Rugby) - won by James Midmer
-
Autographed Brawn F1 cap signed by J.Button (World Champion) &
R.Barrichello - won by James Wates
-
2 tkts England vs Pakistan (Cricket) - won by Alan Clarke
-
2 tkts Australia vs Pakistan (Cricket) - won by Geoff Moon
Granty as usual took the bowling and sixes prizes and
has decided not to bother return either as he will be playing again next
season, Chappers stole the batting prize again. Young Tom Laudy
received the Young Player of the Year Award and Anjai Patel received the
prize for Special Contribution to the Club.
And so on
to the speeches, for those sober enough to listen were treated
some cracking speeches first from
Mr. Ken Schofield CBE a former
Executive Director of the Professional Golfers Association and later the
Chairman of the England Cricket Team Review following the Ashes defeat
in Australia in 2007/08 who blamed everything on Freddie's declaration
at Brisbane, our very own Mr. James Midmer Esq. H.C.C. Sun. Cap. who
recounted some of the funnier moments from a cracking Headley season and
the evening was rounded off by musings and witticisms from Mr. Mark
Austin who is ITV’s anchor newscaster and has played at Headley for the
Presidents XI team on a number of occasions.
Great food, good beer and some refined company what more could you ask
for?
All in all a great time was had by all, roll on next season.
