Nomads: 209-6 dec – 42 overs
Headley: 211-5 (Thisanayagam 69, Barton 46*)
The Sunday XI bounced back to form with a strong 5 wicket win over the Nomads. On an unusually cold and breezy June afternoon Headley won the toss and elected to field first in a timed game. Nick Tunnell bowled a super spell of zippy seam with no luck at all as the Nomads made solid, if unspectacular, progress to 60-0 off 15 overs. The introduction of Yiannis Charimbolous to the attack saw the wicket of Farrell with the aid a super catch in the deep by Bobby Barton. A combination of James Midmer, Steve Barton, Steve Winslet and Johan Thisanayagam then squeezed the Nomads effectively to the point that the visitors, whilst never in real trouble, could muster only 209-6 by the time of a very fair declaration off 42 overs, which looked light on a flat wicket with a lighting fast outfield.
Headley were given in the region of 35 overs to chase this and they made a rocky start, as Andy Pickering (2) was bowled in the first over. Some eyecatching strokes from Philip Chapman (27) were then cut short by a shooter, but the introduction of Johan Thisanayagam (69) at No.4 swung the game Headley’s way through the middle overs. Johan’s crunching strokeplay all-round the wicket proved impossible for the Nomads change bowling to stop, and by the time he was removed for a brutal 69 the score was 140-4. Headley kept things interesting with the loss of Steve Winslet (12), but Steve Barton (46*) had already eased his way in and then saw things home with some trademark hitting, accompanied by the watchful James Midmer (12*). Headley chased the total in 26 overs before both sides raced to the warmth of the pavilion!
The side next week take on the President’s XI in a summer highlight, all spectators welcome for what should hopefully be a fantastic day up at the club. The action starts at 2:00.
