Verdayne Green: 165-9
Sunday XI: 169-7
By 3 wickets
The Sunday XI put together a rattling chase to beat Verdayne Green, a thoroughly nice side from near Warlingham who made their second trip up to the HCG.
Both sides had eight players present at the scheduled start time and Verdayne Green made the obvious choice to bat. Fortunately Headley found two capable fielding subs and made a tight start through Nick Tunnell and the ever-miserly Grant Waller. Verdayne’s No.4 made a decent 41 but the visitors never really broke the shackles and some late slogging also didn’t come off; Bobby Barton snaring two wickets in the final overs.
Set 166 to win Headley did not hang about with James Midmer, Barney Cowie and Rich Mayson getting off to a flier before Verdayne’s impressive opening bowlers got the slips involved. It was nip and tuck for a while but some trademark tracer bullets cover-drives from Steve Winslet (45) raced Headley past 100 and with a strong line-up still to come Headley moved into favoritism as the Presidential delegation arrived. Winslet fell to an uncharacteristic slog but fine cameos from Lee Dickinson and Bobby Barton saw Headley home on around 25 overs, leaving time for a few beers.
Headley play Tadworth next week in what is, remarkably, a new fixture against the geographically closest team.
