The Sunday XI opened their season at the second time of asking with the visit of a very friendly Nuthurst side. Arctic conditions prevailed throughout and Nuthurst made the very sensible decision to field first and avoid the early evening stint when temperatures looked set to drop below 5 degrees!

Headley batted very well to reach an untroubled 194-4 whereupon James Midmer declared (in hindsight a touch early) after 37.3 overs. Chairman Andrew Pickering battered 53 before a surprising mix-up with fellow Mancunian Lee Dickinson saw him run out. Dickinson (40), Adam Hughes (39) and James Midmer (43) then all accumulated without alarm for the rest of the innings, but Headley’s trump card Mitch Pickering (0) chipped to mid-wicket and with him went the chance of a total of 230-plus.

194 still seemed defendable however with Henry Elburn at his sharp, skiddy best early doors. However, a brilliant partnership of nearly 100 between Jonny Willis (85) and Guy Ekins put the visitors in the driving seat at 120-1. Willis anchored the innings and whilst Elburn (3-42) fought a lone-hand this was not really a vintage bowling or fielding performance from Headley. Both sides made 190-odd for 4 in 38 overs so Headley could feel a bit hard-done by with the result, but it was no shame to lose to the kind of stylish, disciplined batting the visitors put together. Nuthurst thoroughly deserved the win and have also become firm favourites in the bar in the three years of this fixture, long may it continue!
