Sunday XI: 239-5 (A.Pickering 77, Elburn 51)
Verdayne Green: 170 all out
The Sunday XI recorded a strong win in this new fixture against Verdayne Green, a really nice bunch of guys from Warlingham.
Under sunny skies Headley won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first on a hard, true deck with a lightning fast outfield. Chairman Andy Pickering (77) and Henry Elburn (51) opened the batting, moving the early scoring along at a rate of 10 an over, Pickering in particular meting out some harsh treatment in his usual arc of wide mid-on. Verdayne’s change bowling was accurate and the visitors throttled the scoring rate back to 120-0 after 20 overs. Pickering then fell for a well-made 77, Elburn for a decent 51. Headley had a strong batting line up and even after rare cheap dismissals for Faz Ahmed (3) and James Moss (5), a combination of James Midmer (42*), Steve Barton (37) and debutant Johan Thisanayagam (14*) powered Headley up to 239-5 off the allotted 35 overs.
Verdayne made a solid start to the chase with opener Indi (48) striking some savage blows down the ground, but some accurate bowling from Grant Waller and Bobby Barton kept the rate in check. The visitors got to 56-0 off 12 overs before Steve Barton and debutant Johan Thisanayagam were summoned. Thisanayagam (2-8) immediately generated fierce pace and bounce and struck twice in his second (and sensibly final) over, the second with the aid of a sharp slip catch from James Midmer (a rare outbreak of genuine cricket at the HCG). Barton also soon struck and when Elburn then removed Indi the game was up. Verdayne’s lower order swung hard but a good spell from Faz Ahmed (3-24) and further wickets for Moss (1-19), Elburn (2-40) and Barton sr (2-37) brought the innings to a close at 170 all out. Both sides stayed for a few beers on what had turned into a stunning late spring evening. Headley next week take on Indus Valley CC in another new fixture – all support welcome!
