Headley: 166-5 (Mottashed 58)
Norwood Exiles: 91 all out (Clarke 3-18)
Headley’s strong recent form continued with a 75 run win in a new fixture against Norwood Exiles from Crystal Palace. Headley batted first in a 35 over game on a pitch that had been almost completely underwater on Saturday and was understandably very sticky and slow. Norwood’s attack bowled well and Jason Harcourt (9) and Adam Hughes (30) had to scrap hard early on. Jon Mottashed (58) then stepped up a gear with some supreme timing and placement, taking the score to 102-2 before being caught in the deep. Steve Miles and Steve Winslet both came and went fairly quickly leaving James Midmer (32*) and Ed Boord (25*) to swipe and scamper a closing 50 partnership to post 166-5, below par on other days but a fair total on the wicket.
The total soon started to look very competitive as Alan Clarke (3-18) and Henry Elburn (1-14) both ran amok after tea. Clarke’s line and length induced three early catches including a screamer from Neil Sunderland at square leg. Sunderland then bowled a very tight spell (7 overs, 3 maidens, 2 wickets for 5 runs) in combination with fellow left-armer Andrew Pickering (1-35) as Norwood’s middle order struggled to accelerate. No.3 Shahid struck a decent 40 but Norwood gradually fell further and further behind the required rate and needed 100 from the last 10. Jon Mottashed (2-6) then finished things off with son Jamie Mottashed bowling a very tidy spell of three overs from the other end as Norwood folded to 91 all out. A few beers in the sunshine followed with new canine supporters Mollie and Roxie stealing the show. Headley next week take on RNVR.
