Nomads: 181 all out (Barton 5-31)
Sunday XI: 135-9
The Sunday XI drew with Nomads on a day dominated by spin bowling at the HCG. The teams arrived to 30+ degree temperatures and it was Headley who lost a crucial toss and were sent out in the field to battle both dehydration and a strong Nomads batting line-up. Nomads raced to 60-0 after 10 overs before the ball was thrown to Steve Barton, whose first ball was left by Farrell only to rag almost square and hit middle stump. This set the tone for the rest of the game. Barton (12-2-35-5) proceeded to rip out the Nomads’ top order with some deadly spin bowling, and despite some resistance lower down, Nomads finished on 181 all out.
On another day this would have been reachable but the Nomads threw the new ball to skilful left-arm spinner Joe Ireland, who recieved the same assistance as Barton in reducing Headley to 30-5. It was now a battle for survival. The lower-middle order of Lee Dickinson (15), Steve Barton (20), Nick Tunnell (28) and Andy Pickering (30) all fought hard against a strong attack, to the point where with 8 overs to go Bobby Barton and Toby Winslet were left to show true grit in fighting out for a draw. Barton faced the final over from a re-introduced Ireland with distinction.
The match was a high standard and Headley’s bowling and fielding in particular was a great effort in very hot conditions. The Nomads proved to be very sociable opposition and the game was played in a great spirit, roll on next year.
