Sunday XI: 216-8 (A.Brooks 50)
Nuthurst CC: 201 all out
Headley survived a late scare to beat Nuthurst on a chilly Spring day up at the HCG. Headley had looked on-course to comfortably defend a total of 216 with the visitors slipping to 134-7, but Nuthurst’s No.7 Will Rossiter smashed a brilliant 89 to put the visitors in the box seat at 201-8 with 13 balls remaining. Henry Elburn then made a brave call to summon mid-on and mid-off up off the final ball of the 33rd over. He was rewarded as Rossiter laced one to Grant Waller who took an absolute screamer. Steve Barton then grabbed the final wicket to give Headley a narrow win.
Headley’s earlier score of 216-8 off 35 overs was probably around par on a very good pitch; significant pace and carry being unusual and very promising signs for the season ahead. The ball nipped around early but Barney Cowie smashed 49, Andy Brooks 50 and Andy Pickering 42 as Headley motored along, before a late slump left Nuthurst in with a chance that they very nearly took.
This has quickly become a firm favourite fixture with Nuthurst providing stern opposition with a very friendly spirit. The rematch is already eagerly awaited next year; the visitors have recently completed their new clubhouse and a rare away game for Headley was discussed. Headley this week take on Woodlawn with all support welcome!
