Sunday XI: 236-6 (Winslet 86*)
Woodlawn CC: 180-9
A brutal knock of 86* from Steve Winslet ultimately secured Headley a win against a tough Woodlawn side. Headley batted first but were initially restricted to 80-3 after 20 overs by some excellent opening bowling. Steve Winslet (86*) and debutant Ryan Hawke then constructed a decent partnership against similarly accurate first change bowling; Winslet looked ominous from the start and Hawke was very fluent off the back foot, despite struggling for grip in loud red trainers. Hawke eventually gave way to Steve Barton with around 9 overs remaining. With both openers and first change bowled straight through, the final seven overs were absolute carnage with two unfortunate second-change bowlers smashed to all parts. Barton (45) hit several into the surrounding woods and Winslet peppering the car park to take Headley to 236-6 off 35 overs.
After tea, Bobby Barton was again exceptional in the opening overs with two wickets in an economical five over spell of accurate away swing. Nick Tunnel bowled a tight spell, with Toby Winslet also very tidy and Woodlawn gradually fell behind the required rate. Woodlawn had one opener taking the fight on with a succession of boundaries, and he received support from the captain in a long 3rd wicket partnership which briefly kept the visitors in the hunt. Henry Elburn was summoned to break the partnership; bowling Woodlawn’s captain and Nick Tunnel then took a fantastic catch off Steve Barton to remove the opener for around 80. The remainder of the line-up folded quickly. Woodlawn closed 180-9. But for Winslet’s knock this would have been a very tight game.
